how/ why drum shells

what makes a drum kit sound better than another? after removing different tunings from the equation, its mostly the shells. that isn’t to say that there is only one type of drum shell thats good, or that vintage will always sound better than new- its to say that a well constructed shell will be made of high quality wood, and have edges that will allow the drum to resonate evenly so that you can tune it to your liking, not just the mysterious “sweet spot” that most kits seem to have.

“in 1968, when bonham was playing a kit back then- it wasn’t a vintage kit, it was a new kit”.-bill cardwell
